WhatsApp Fallback to SMS

If a WhatsApp message cannot be delivered, Diobox can automatically resend the message as an SMS message. This helps maximize delivery and ensures guests still receive important event communications when WhatsApp delivery is unavailable.

Why Use SMS Fallback

SMS fallback improves delivery reliability when guests cannot receive WhatsApp messages.

Common examples include:

  • The phone number is not registered on WhatsApp

  • WhatsApp marketing messages cannot be delivered to U.S. phone numbers

  • The guest cannot receive WhatsApp messages due to regional or platform restrictions

  • The recipient has WhatsApp disabled or unavailable on their device

How SMS Fallback Works

When a WhatsApp message fails delivery, Diobox automatically attempts to resend the same message as an SMS message.

This process happens automatically in the background and does not require any manual action from organizers.

Each fallback SMS uses 1 additional messaging credit.

Configure SMS Fallback

SMS fallback is enabled by default for all WhatsApp messages within an event.

You can view the current SMS fallback status directly from a WhatsApp draft message.

To enable or disable SMS fallback, open WhatsApp Sending Options from either:

  • The message editor

  • The Text Message dropdown menu in the upper-right corner of the screen

SMS fallback settings are configured at the event level and apply to all WhatsApp messages sent within that event.

Message Delivery Behavior

If a WhatsApp message is successfully delivered, no SMS message is sent.

If WhatsApp delivery fails and SMS fallback is enabled, Diobox automatically sends the SMS version of the message to the same recipient.

Message delivery activity and fallback attempts are tracked within the message reporting and analytics tools available in Diobox.
