Secure Kiosk Mode and Lock the Device

Updated yesterday

Kiosk Mode provides a branded, self-service check-in experience where guests scan their own QR codes upon arrival. To ensure a smooth and secure setup, each device should be configured to prevent unintended access, interruptions, or data loss.

Use this article's sections below as a checklist when using Kiosk Mode:

Lock the Device to the Diobox App (Guided Access)

Even with Kiosk Mode enabled, the device itself is still a full iOS device. Without additional restrictions, users could exit the app, switch to another app, or access the Home Screen.

To fully lock the device into the Diobox app, use Guided Access. This is a built-in iOS feature designed for kiosk-style setups. When enabled, it prevents users from leaving the current app or interacting with other parts of the device.

Guided Access is strongly recommended for all Kiosk Mode setups, especially for unattended or self-service check-in stations.

Step 1

Enable Guided Access

  • Open Settings

  • Go to Accessibility

  • Tap Guided Access

  • Turn it on

  • Set a passcode

Step 2

Start Guided Access

  • Open the Diobox app

  • Launch Kiosk Mode

  • Triple-click the side button (or Home button on older devices)

  • Tap the Session Settings and ensure that all items except for Software Keyboards and Touch are disabled

  • Tap Start

While Guided Access is active, users cannot switch apps or access the Home Screen.

Set a Kiosk Mode PIN

When opening the Kiosk Mode Launcher, you have the option to set a 4-digit PIN. This PIN is required to exit Kiosk Mode.

While Kiosk Mode can be started without a PIN, it is strongly recommended to set one. Without a PIN, users may be able to exit Kiosk Mode and access the main app, including guest data and event settings.

Once set, the PIN is saved on the device and will be used for future Kiosk Mode sessions. You can update or change the PIN each time you launch Kiosk Mode.

Exiting Kiosk Mode

To exit Kiosk Mode and return to normal Diobox app use:

  • Tap the exit icon in the lower right corner of the screen

  • Enter the Kiosk Mode PIN

To exit Guided Access:

  • Triple-click the side button (or Home button)

  • Enter the Guided Access passcode

Keeping the Device Powered

Kiosk Mode is designed for continuous use throughout an event.

Keep the device plugged into a power source at all times to avoid interruptions. A drained battery will stop check-in and may disrupt guest flow.

Device Stays Awake During Kiosk Mode

When Kiosk Mode is active, Diobox automatically keeps the device awake and prevents it from sleeping due to inactivity.

Using Kiosk Stands for Physical Security

For in-person events, kiosk stands provide both security and a more polished presentation.

Common options include:

  • Desk stands for check-in tables

  • Floor stands for freestanding kiosk stations

  • Lockable enclosures to prevent device removal

  • Integrated setups that include space for badge printers

These setups help secure the device, reduce the risk of theft, and create a more professional check-in experience.

Some of these stands also include built-in power and cable management for keeping the device charged.

Proper setup of both software and hardware ensures that Kiosk Mode runs reliably and securely throughout your event.
